the dead & the gone
Susan Pfeffer
In this companion novel to Susan Beth Pfeffer's Life As We Knew It, the dead & the gone examines the same events as they unfold in New York City, revealed through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Puerto Rican Alex Morales. When Alex's parents disappear in the aftermath of tidal waves, he must care for his two younger sisters, even as Manhattan becomes a deadly wasteland, and food and aid dwindle.
In this book, the second in the series, we meet Alex, a boy living in a very different place than Miranda. He is in New York City, and his experiences are not the same as her rural setting. I liked this book the least of the 4 books in the series. I was less interested in Alex and his friends. The sense of urgency that the other books had seemed to be missing a little for me in this one. It is also a bit darker in the experiences that he and his family have. I found myself skimming to find any mention of Miranda.
