Brokaw FFA Members Compete in District Leadership Events
Forty-eight Brokaw FFA members of Clarinda recently participated in Career Development Events and other activities at the Southwest District FFA Convention held at Carroll High School on Saturday, March 5. Many of these members moved on from sub-district contests in February as a result of being in the top three in their respective contest areas. Chapter members competed in twelve different speaking events, two quiz events, a welding event, and one officer book event. The following members competed in the following events at the district level with their placings in parentheses: Dalton Wright, Bailey Nordyke, Presley Jobe, Grant Barr, Amelia Hesse, and alternates Aly Meier and Brooke Meyer in the Parliamentary Procedure Contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Quinn Durfey, Jadyn Sunderman, and Adam Johnson in the Chapter Program of Activities contest (Gold); Allyson Johnson in the Radio Broadcasting contest (Gold); Callie King, Emma Hanson, Paige McCoy, Riley Nothwehr, Taylor Rasmussen, Cooper Phillips, and Madison Stalder in the Conduct of Meetings contest (Gold, alternate to state); Colby Carlson in the Ag Sales contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Kaylee Smith in the Creed Speaking contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Jason Wright in the Extemporaneous Speaking event (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Colbie Wilmes in the Job Interview contest (Gold, alternate to state); Phoebe Garrett in the Public Speaking contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); and Brooklyn Harris in the Chapter Website contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state). Four middle school FFA teams competed in competition as well. Two teams participated in the Ag CSI competition that included: Richlyn Muff, Addison Dow, Blakely Ridnour, Jalon Olson, and Jayka Mark who received a Silver rating; and Gabby Derry, Haidyn Garrett, Hannah Comer, and Owen Wright who received a Gold rating and was named alternate to state. In the Ag Impact competition, the team of Aidan Johnson, Sam Kline, Jack Kline, Morgan Manes, and Noah Harris received a Gold rating and alternate to state; and the team of Riley Pulliam, Mataya Eighmy, Lexi Clark, Adysen Hester, Elle Nothwehr, and Stevie Wilmes received a Gold rating and 2ndPlace, advancing to state. Freshmen Greenhand members participated in the Greenhand Quiz contest with Riley Nothwehr (8th), Callie King (9th), Cooper Phillips, Emma Hanson, and Kaylee Smith receiving a Gold; Maddy Stalder, Kody Erickson, Gianna Rock, Colt Garey, and Christian Mascher receiving a Silver; and Andrew Hughes, Hayden Breach, and Layne Brown receiving a Bronze. Members competing in the Farm Business Management Quiz event were Jason Wright (1st), Adam Johnson and Ethan Fast (9th), Colbie Wilmes and Nathan King (10th) with a Gold; Colby Carlson, Owen Johnson, Grant Jobe, Brevin Coston, McKenna Yearington, and Rhyn Walters with a Silver; and Alea Van Vactor and Jaron Robberts with a Bronze. Noah Comer participated in the Oxy-Acetylene Welding competition, receiving a Gold rating and 2nd Place.
Allyson Johnson and Phoebe Garrett submitted the Reporter’s Scrapbook for review at the district level. The chapter scrapbook received a Gold rating and 2nd Place, qualifying it for state competition. Brevin Coston and Owen Johnson served as delegates during the business session and voted to elect the 2022-2023 Southwest District officer team. Phoebe Garrett and Hailee Knight performed their duties during the general session as members of this school year’s district officer team. Ten members received the state FFA Academic Achievement Award: Grant Jobe, Colby Carlson, Jason Wright, Colbie Wilmes, Jadyn Sunderman, Hailee Knight, McKenna Yearington, Jordyn McQueen, Chloe Strait, and Aubrey Herzberg. The Brokaw Chapter was also named a Superior National Chapter as well.
After applications and interviews in January, Phoebe Garrett was selected to be on the ballot for the district reporter for next school year. Phoebe gave a two-minute speech and answered questions, and was elected to district office for the 2022-2023 school year as the Southwest District Reporter.
All seven leadership speaking contest areas that advanced above from the district level will compete against members from chapters out of the other five FFA districts in the state of Iowa at the State FFA Leadership Conference held in Des Moines on April 11-12.
